Hello World Out There World!
As the winter holiday’s are drawing closer we are starting to fill our houses with all kinds of wonderful smells. Right now, with all the baking I’ve been doing my house smells of apple and baked goods. This led me to looking for a word to add to my collection which I could use instead of candle but it turns out I found a word pertaining to incense instead. This week’s OWF is brought to you by thural, an adjective (descriptive word) that was created around 1624. The word thural means ‘of or pertaining to incense’.
So, how is this word pronounced?
THUR- AL
Examples of this word in a sentence:
Every Christmas our house is filled with thural herbs like cinnamon, sage, and thyme.
Or…
The thural smells of clove filled the kitchen.
Or…
I love whenever I burn thural herbs as it makes my house smell amazing.
Should this word make a comeback?
No, I don’t believe so. I find the word thural redundant and believe just saying ‘burn herbs’ or ‘burn incense’ is clear enough. It is still and interesting word to add to your list if you are writing historical fiction or have a time travelling character who isn’t up-to-date with modern language.

Totally agree with you! Incense is a much prettier word than thural. Burn it! :p

Thural rhymes with feral… so it doesn’t sound like a good word to me

Hmmm… I mean, it has the soft sounds, but they’re not… mellifluous the way ‘incense’ is.

I’d probably use it in an explanation section of my book where my snobby old character is teaching my younger character about vapers and steams… it’s a word he’d use but I can’t picture anyone else…

Funny when I finally got to a Christmastime mass the first thing that struck me was the incense! There’s nothing like Catholic incense, if you ask me. š

It is usually frankincense. Although there are 6 different kinds of frankincense… so to narrow down which know I don’t know. Still, whenever I burn any kind of incense at home I think of sitting on the hard wooden pews during a school mass usually held at the Catholic church down the street from my school. ^.^

lol the renovated St. Michael’s has padded seats. Sorta weird. Like taking a subway ride… š I’m so new to this whole churchgoing thing that I didn’t even know it was a frankincense. But that makes sense considering the bible story talks about fr., gold and myrrh.

They focus on incense that is usually crystalized so it can be stored longer. This leaves them with tree sap like frankincense, myrrh and a few others I don’t know the proper names for. I grew up in the Catholic system so this stuff is sort of drill I to my head… Not much of a church goer anymore either… But I would try it again if they had padded eats. XD
But honestly… That is sort of weird…

Someday when you and yours are down there check it out. I’d be curious to hear your first impression from an aesthetic standpoint. A renovation to the tune of $128 million.. so they say. š

Wow… I remember when they started the renovations but I didn’t know they spent that much… 0.0

Yeah I was sorta sad when I first went in. Being an old Toronto boy I really liked the old look. But I’ve grown somewhat accustomed to the new. Btw, not that anyone really cares, but i converted to RCC in 2001 and enjoy doing it my way. Not sure I could do that in a smaller town. I had you pegged (in my fallible imagination) as a non-churchgoing Protestant. Don’t know why. Maybe cos that’s what I was! š

It’s a very personal thing, for sure. I’ve dabbled in just about everything and still find the Catholic churchgoing complicated, like most things in life! š
